In managing the family farm Adrian initiated many changes, changing traditional cropping practices to include conservation tillage to direct drilling. He introduced new and modified machinery and implemented a range of management practices to ensure long-term sustainability.
Crop rotations included wheat, barley, triticale, lupins and canola. Adrian also managed the production of wool, prime lamb and beef – once topping the market for a herd of Angus steers.
Adrian takes a keen interest in local landcare initiatives and keeps informed through his membership on a number of industry groups, such as the South Australian Farmers Federation. He maintains an active interest in diversification and value-adding opportunities through his regular contact with the Murraylands Regional Development Board.
The family farm was leased out in 2005 to allow Adrian to campaign full-time for the Liberal candidacy. Since his election to Parliament in March 2006 he has continued this arrangement to allow him to focus totally on serving the electorate and its constituents and carry out his Parliamentary duties.
Prior to taking over management of the family farm, Adrian worked in a wide variety of farming roles including crop and stock management, shearing, baling and general labouring. He has also worked outside farming in both the earthmoving and mining industries.
His work has taken him to many parts of the state and country; the Murray Mallee, the Upper and Lower South East, Moomba and the South East of Western Australia.
