Finns Law now legislated

Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick is pleased to see the Statutes Amendment (Rights of Foster Parents, Guardians and Kinship Carers) Bill, known as Finns Law, become Legislation.

In the unfortunate circumstance of a foster child passing whilst in the care of an Other Person Guardian, the Statutes Amendment (Rights of Foster Parents, Guardians and Kinship Carers) Act will now provide them with the opportunity to be listed on the child’s Death Certificate.

The Act will also allow for the Chief Executive of the Department to assist with the funeral arrangements of a child in care.

“After enduring many of the hurdles presented, it is great to see this Bill pass through both Houses of Parliament and become Legislation,” said Mr Pederick.

“It proves that dedication and persistence can achieve results and it’s great to see these positive outcomes in the Parliament.

“I appreciate those who have cooperated and assisted with this process.

“I also wish to thank Monica Perrett for her ongoing advocacy and perseverance with this process, as it did take some time.

“I look forward to seeing this Legislation provide Other Person Guardians with the opportunity to be listed on the death certificate of their foster child and for the ability of an approved carer to ask the Chief Executive of the Department to assist with the funeral arrangements of a child under care,” said Mr Pederick.
