Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 15:06 :50 ): My question is to the Minister for Agriculture. In regard to the New Horizons initiative that was announced in the lead-up to the election, is the minister aware of the work Mr Clem Obst of Mundulla, who has been advocating the claying of sandy soils for the past 45 years and who was awarded an Order of Australia 10 years ago for developing and promoting clay spreading techniques to increase water efficiency and retention in sandy soils?

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (12:42): I rise to support this motion moved by the member for Frome, which states:

That this house—

1. Congratulates the Women in Agriculture and Business of South Australia Inc., which was founded in Riverton, on its Centenary held in Riverton on the 28 and 29 October 2017.

2. Recognises the organisation's achievements and services; and in particular for—

(a) encouraging interest and participation in activities of rural people and organisations, especially in primary industries;

(b) promoting goodwill, friendship and understanding among members;

(c) providing effective leadership to link Women in Agriculture and Business and Agricultural Bureau activities through the membership network;

(d) generating opportunities for educational, cultural and technical advancement to members, combining with other rural organisations where appropriate;

(e) encouraging and fostering the ability of women to take a shared responsibility for the community in which we live, from local to world level; pressing for recognition of the needs and worth of rural people at all levels of government; and

(f) promoting and supporting the preservation of our environment and ecology and care for the land.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (12:52): On behalf of the member for Chaffey, I move:

That this house—

(a) acknowledges the 60th anniversary of the Yamba quarantine station and the role it has played in protecting South Australia from biosecurity threats, including fruit fly, phylloxera, exotic invasive weeds and nursery material;

(b) highlights the ongoing fruit fly threat to the Riverland and South Australia from interstate;

(c) notes the importance of the Yamba quarantine station operating 24 hours, 7 days a week; and

(d) ensures everyone is aware of the importance of keeping fruit fly out of South Australia and adhering to the strict restrictions in place for bringing fruit, vegetables, other plants and plant products into the state.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (20:35): I rise to speak to the Statutes Amendment (Leading Practice in Mining) Bill. I speak on the basis of being born and bred on a farm and also having been actively involved in the mining industry and still actively involved as an MP in the mining industry. Going back to the history of mining in South Australia, four years after South Australia was settled, in September 1840 to be exact, two Cornishmen, which is where the Pedericks came from, located a strain—I do not think it was us: we pulled up in Plympton and set up a farm and a boot shop, and I put that on the record

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (21:26): I rise to speak to the Environment Waste (Protection Reforms) Amendment Bill 2017. Waste management has come a significant way forward just in my lifetime. In a small country town like Coomandook I can show people—and they may see it when they drive through to Melbourne—that there is a small patch in the scrub line right next to the highway that used to be a local rubble road before the road was directed from Tailem Bend through Cooke Plains to Coomandook. Anyway, there is a patch right next to the highway that was the Coomandook dump. I can tell exactly where it was because there is nothing growing there but weeds.

I note that the bill was introduced by the Minister for Consumer and Business Services on 28 September this year and that it goes about amending the Residential Parks Act 2007.

A long overdue funding injection of almost $30 million for three schools in the electorate of Hammond has been welcomed by local Member of Parliament Adrian Pederick.

“This week’s announcement that almost $30 million will be spent upgrading facilities at the Murray Bridge High School, Mannum Community College and Murray Bridge North School is great news for our community,” said Member for Hammond Adrian Pederick.
