Statutes Amendment (Gender Identity and Equity) Bill
Second Reading
Adjourned debate on second reading.
(Continued from 10 February 2016.)
Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 16:28 ): I rise to speak to the Statutes Amendment (Gender Identity and Equity) Bill 2016, which is a bill for an act to amend various acts to remove discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer South Australians. People may not be surprised that I will not be supporting this piece of legislation. I come from a Christian upbringing in a very conservative area in a conservative electorate, and even from hearing just the first couple of presentations today, I am wondering if this is just one step closer to legalising gay marriage by the back door.

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 11:16 ): I rise to support this motion in regard to Ngarkat National Park. The motion reads:
That this house requests His Excellency the Governor to make a proclamation under section 30(2) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 excluding allotments 104 and 105 in approved plan No. DP28853, Hundred of Fisk, lodged in the Lands Titles Registration Office at Adelaide, from the Ngarkat Conservation Park.

Liberal Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick today spoke to Parliament’s Natural Resources Committee (NRC) on behalf of many outraged residents in Hammond and greater South Australia.
“Regional South Australia is of great importance to the prosperity of the State. Those living in the regions need to be considered and preserved and this proposal doesn’t do either,” said Mr Pederick.

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 11:27 ): I rise to support the Evidence (Journalists) Amendment Bill that was introduced last year in the other place by the Hon. Andrew McLachlan. This bill certainly recognises the critically important role that the media and the profession of journalism plays in protecting the rights of the individual against capricious acts of the state.

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 11:27 ): I want to make a brief contribution to the 538th report of the Public Works Committee regulating structures on Margaret Dowling Creek and Eckerts Creek. These structures will certainly be of benefit in the management of systems and environmental management right throughout the Murray, but as the member for Chaffey has indicated, we need to manage all of that water wisely because there is only so much of it. It has only been a few years since the millennium drought broke in September 2010 and it was a great feeling to see that muddy Darling water flowing into the river, because that was the first lot of water that relieved the situation for the River Murray in my electorate, when the water level had dropped by approximately two metres.

The Hon. T.J. STEPHENS ( 15:28 ): I seek leave to make a brief explanation before asking the Minister for the Environment a question regarding long-nosed fur seals.
Leave granted.
The Hon. T.J. STEPHENS: The hardworking excellent member for Hammond, Mr Adrian Pederick MP, has referred to me a number of reports and investigations into the overpopulation of long-nosed fur seals along the South Australian coastline. Given that 10,000 fur seals consume over 400 tonnes of seafood per day, my question is: what is the effect on commercial and recreational fishers of this overpopulation of fur seals?

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 16:44 ): I rise to make a few comments in relation to the Family Relationships (Parentage Presumptions) Amendment Bill 2015. I must say at the start of my contribution, a lot of bills and legislation go through this place and barely get a whimper out of your electorate, but certainly in relation to this bill, I got far more than a whimper.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (11:56): I pay due respect to the member for Bright and the significant amount of his life that he has spent in relation to this legislation in a former life. Be that as it may, he is always very insightful, especially in the work that he has done in the past, and he is doing very good work in the parliament. We are here today in regard to the Housing Improvement Bill. It is quite interesting. This is a bill for:
