Monarto Safari Park welcomes first of five elephants

Member for Hammond Adrian Pederick has welcomed the safe arrival of the Monarto Safari Park's newest (and largest) resident, Burma the Asian elephant, following her journey from Auckland Zoo.

Burma is the first elephant in 30 years to call South Australia home and it is something Mr Pederick has been hoping to see ever since Monarto Zoo transformed into Monarto Safari Park.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we finally have a resident elephant in South Australia at what is the world's largest safari park outside of Africa," Mr Pederick said.

"Elaine Bensted and the team at Zoos SA have done an incredible job transforming Monarto Safari Park into a world-class tourist attraction and I have no doubt Burma's arrival will bring even more crowd numbers."

Burma needs to undergo a quarantine period before she can greet her fans and, if all goes to plan, Mr Pederick intends on being one of her first visitors.

"I was more than happy to support the efforts by Zoos SA to bring the elephants to South Australia so I am quite eager to head out to Monarto so I can see the results of all their hard work," Mr Pederick said.

Burma will be joined by four other elephants at Monarto Safari Park with two more set to make the journey by mid-2025 and the other two arriving by the end of 2025.
