Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (11:29): I move:

That this house—

(a) signals its support for the South Australian veterans community; and

(b) recognises the deep and important roles ex-service organisations play in providing advice, support and community for veterans in South Australia.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (20:19): I rise to make a few comments in regard to the Supply Bill 2021 and note that the amount of money we are authorising so we can write the cheques for the Public Service and others is $6,161,000,000. That gives assent for enough finance to get us through until we have the Appropriation Bill debate and all the debate around it. We have based this figure on the actual appropriations that were required for the first four months of the 2020-21 financial year. The passage of the bill is essential to enable the operations of government to be paid for the period 1 July 2021 until the Appropriation Bill is approved.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (12:05): I rise today to speak on the Children and Young People (Safety) (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill. This bill ensures that the legislative framework for children in care in South Australia is efficient, responsive and inclusive. It prioritises amendments that seek to strengthen the effective and efficient operation of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017, the principal act.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (10:52): I rise to speak to the Criminal Law Consolidation (Bushfires) Amendment Bill 2021. I certainly appreciate the sentiment the member for Waite has in bringing this bill to the house. As a CFS firefighter and landowner, as I have mentioned in this place many times, either fighting fires on the frontline or mopping up after many in operations—twice on Kangaroo Island and once at Sedan, just outside my electorate currently—I know that bushfires are a terrible thing.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (16:46): I rise to speak to the Landscape South Australia (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2020. Obviously, issues of water significantly affect the seat of Hammond, being at the bottom of the Murray-Darling Basin. Before I go on, my wife previously worked for natural resources management, a few years ago now, as an environmental scientist.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (12:15): If we are talking about cars, we had a 1974 HQ with a 308. That was a beautiful wagon and we should never have sold it. It was very reliable.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (11:27): I rise to make a contribution to the Statutes Amendment (Barossa Rail Corridor) Bill. I want to make the point that my grandfather Clarrie Dutton worked out of Gawler railway station. He lived at Freeling and used to ride his bike from Freeling to Gawler so he could be a guard on the trains—and we had guards in those days.

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (16:26): I rise to make a contribution to the Criminal Law Consolidation (Causing Death by Use of Motor Vehicle) Amendment Bill. It is a very, very serious subject. I have been aware over the years in my electorate of some terrible outcomes with respect to people who have been killed in a motor vehicle accident. That is a terrible tragedy, an absolute tragedy, and then there is the other side of it: how do we deal with the offender at the time?
