New Zealand/Long-nosed Fur Seals petition

Liberal Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick, has today tabled a petition in Parliament with 1,594 signatures calling on the State Government to immediately identify and implement an over-abundant native species management plan and to include a Sustainable Harvest of the New Zealand Fur Seals.

“It is great to see the support received from my electorate and beyond around the issue,” said Mr Pederick.

“I produced this petition with the hope it would open the Government’s eyes and allow them to see the true damage this species is causing.

“This shows the support behind the petition and that the community understand the seriousness of the issue.

“We have an environment that is suffering and a fishing industry that are on their knees begging the State Government to take proper action.

“The Weatherill Labor Government must stand up for our Ramsar listed Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert.

“Our native and migratory birds are being attacked by the NZ/Long-nosed Fur Seals – immediate action is needed now.”
