Mypolonga Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 12:45 ): I move:

That this house calls on the state government to establish Mypolonga as a fruit fly exclusion zone and commit extra funding to biosecurity measures to protect against fruit fly threats and outbreaks in South Australia.

Social Development Committee: Sale And Consumption of Alcohol

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 11:18 :18 ): I rise today to address the 36th report of the Social Development Committee, entitled the Sale and Consumption of Alcohol, and note that most of this work, in fact pretty well all the inquiry work, was done by the previous committee from the previous parliament. It was my privilege as part of the Social Development Committee with the new members to finalise the report for the parliament. I just want to note the terms of reference that were put down for this inquiry.

Commissioner for Kangaroo Island Bill

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 16:43 :54 ): I rise today to speak to the Commissioner for Kangaroo Island Bill 2014 which was introduced on 8 May 2014 by the Attorney-General, and I note that we certainly will not be supporting this bill in this place. This bill seeks to establish a commissioner to provide for the development of management plans in relation to the coordination and delivery of infrastructure and services on Kangaroo Island and other matters relating to Kangaroo Island and for other purposes.

Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 12:47 :45 ): I rise, too, to support this motion of the member for Flinders, that this house recognises the 175th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia, and applauds its significant contribution in this state, and it is a significant contribution. I note that the Show Society was set up only three years after Europeans hit South Australia, and they have to be commended—Richard Fewster, John Rothwell and the rest of the current board—for what they have done over many, many years.

Statutes Amendment (Rights of Foster Parents and Guardians) Bill FINNS LAW

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 10:32 ): I move:

That this bill be now read a second time.

I rise to speak with regard to the Statutes Amendment (Rights of Foster Parents and Guardians) Bill 2014, or Finn's law. My first contact with Monica Perrett—and I note that Monica and Nathan Perrett are here today—was when I learnt that she had won the Barnardos Mother of the Year award. I was extremely delighted to learn that Mrs Perrett, a well-deserved mother in the electorate of Hammond, had received such a prestigious award. Monica's award symbolises the efforts of a caring and nurturing mother, of not only her own biological children but also those she has chosen to foster, which includes little Finn, now deceased, and her granddaughter, currently.

Fire and Emergency Services

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 15:31 :07 ): I rise today to speak out about the proposed reforms to our emergency services sector and the government's response in regards to the Holloway Review of the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005. I note the very reliable information given to me that the Minister for Emergency Services sent a letter dated 27 July 2014 to volunteer associations, allowing any feedback on the proposed steering committee as to the next stage of the reform process, with comments to be received no later than 5pm on Sunday 3 August 2014.

Supply Bill 2014 Supply Grievance

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 20:31 :14 ): I rise to make comments regarding the Supply Bill response grievance debate and talk about some of the local issues affecting my electorate and surrounding areas. I share some of the concerns of the member for Finniss regarding crime on the Fleurieu Peninsula as we obviously share the area. It was a disgraceful thing to see today that two police were injured by a letter sent to the Victor Harbor station.
