Public Works Committee: Proposal to Expand Mobilong Prison

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (11:29): Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. I was a little distracted during the final moments of the member for Chaffey's comments, but what I will say in this place is that I have willingly entered Mobilong Prison quite a few times and have willingly been allowed to leave—yes, I have always been able to leave.

Supply Bill 2016

Second Reading

Adjourned debate on second reading.

(Continued from 23 March 2016.)

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 12:44 ):

I rise to speak to the Supply Bill 2016. It will not be any surprise to the house that we are supporting this bill, which is an act for the appropriation of money from the Consolidated Account for the financial year ending on 30 June 2017. This bill, when it becomes an act, will allow the appropriate spending of money within government until the budget is assented to. As it says in the bill, we are talking about the appropriation of the sum of $3,444 million, and this is absolutely vital to keep the wheels of the state turning in the months before the budget is assented to. I have a list of issues I want to raise in regard to supply and where money should be spent.

Port Pirie Unemployment Rate

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 11:57 ): I rise to support the motion moved by the member for Goyder:

That this house calls on the member for Frome to take advantage of his position as a cabinet minister and compels the Labor government to immediately address the jobs crisis and economic decline impacting the Port Pirie community; and—

(a) provide residents with job certainty;

(b) stem the flow of young people out of the region and South Australia;

(c) ensure vital industries are sustainable and have the opportunity to grow;

(d) give our regions the attention they deserve and desperately need;

(e) recognise that Port Pirie can play an important role in South Australia's economic recovery; and

(f) avoid the social harm caused by unemployment.

Dog Fence (Payments and Rates) Amendment Bill

Second Reading

Adjourned debate on second reading.

(Continued from 24 February 2016.)

Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (16:20): I, too, rise to support the Dog Fence (Payments and Rates) Amendment Bill 2016. The object of this bill is to make sure that there are sufficient funds and resources available to maintain the Dog Fence into the future. There are six local boards which sit under the Dog Fence Board and ownership of the fence is vested in those local boards, apart from two private owners who manage sections of the fence on their properties. These boards administer the funds and are responsible for the employment of contractors who inspect and maintain sections of the fence.

Senate Select Committee on the Murray-Darling Basin Plan

Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick has some concerns about the report presented by the Select Committee in relation to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

“In reference to the 31 recommendations in the Select Committee report I believe the evaluation on the use of the desalination plant and the investigation of a potential connector between Lake Albert and the Coorong as practical recommendations. However, I consider recommendation 14 outrageous,” said Mr Pederick.

River Murray Boating and Recreational Advisory Group

Mr PEDERICK ( Hammond ) ( 15:14 ): I rise today to speak about the River Murray Boating and Recreational Advisory Group, and I acknowledge the kind words today in question time from the Minister for Transport. This has been a long road for our group. We formed just over three years ago in response to a piece in The Advertiser on the front page about no-wash zones, and we knew we needed to act to protect everyone's rights in relation to the use of the river. So, that is why the River Murray Boating and Recreational Advisory Group was set up.
